Welcome to the petition of Kailash.info! In August 2003 alarming news had been published: Reports that Chinese officials are planning the construction of a road leading around Mount Kailash have proved true. Engineers have started the survey in August 2003. Red survey markers have been applied to the existing footpath used by the pilgrims. The road construction work is planned to start in spring 2004. The 60-kilometres-long road is supposed to be completed within two years time. This project is not only an affront for a billion Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Bonpos. It will as well destroy a landscape bearing an absolutely unique nature and culture for ever. --- For Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Bonpos, the 6.714 m high Mount Kailash (tib. "Kang-Rimpoche") is their most sacred mountain. It is being worshipped as home of the gods and centre of the universe. For thousands of years, until today, pilgrims have been walking around Mount Kailash by foot. The solely possible purpose of the ring road project is the commercial and touristic development of the region, since it is barely inhabited. --- Only the declaration of Mount Kailash and its surroundings as World Heritage by the UNESCO can prevent the project plans to be carried out. --- As reported earlier, since February 2004 we know that the plans to build this road have been cancelled, due to different reasons including high international pressure and this site.

Dear friends of Mount Kailash,
The fragile environment of Mount Kailash, one of the most sacred mountains in the world, may be under threat from Chinese development plans to increase tourism to western Tibet. The local government is understood to have developed an 'ecotourism' plan for the area (2002 - 2012), which includes the upgrading and construction of new roads and other infrastructure to encourage larger scale tourism. In 2003 there were reports that Tibetans who lived locally to Kailash were warned by officials not to speak about the proposals. Mount Kailash is an important place of pilgrimage for followers of many faiths and religions, including Buddhists, Bon practitioners, Jains and Hindus. Most pilgrims walk a holy 'kora' or circuit of the mountain, (a distance of 56 kilometres which ascends to over 5,700 metres above sea level) as a way of purging the body of sin. Kailash is also a popular destination for western travellers, who take between three and five days to complete the circuit. Those who complete 108 circuits apparently gain instant enlightenment.
Only the declaration of Mount Kailash and its surroundings as World Heritage by the UNESCO can protect the region permanentely.
PETITION As a friend of Mount Kailash in the "Tibetan Autonomous Region", Peoples Republic of China, I request the responsible authorities of the government Peoples Republic of China to request the UNESCO to declare the region around Mount Kailash, and the sacred lakes Manasarovar and Rakas Tal, as World Heritage as soon as possible.
